Every well-known employer in the UK seems to have an apprenticeship programme now, geared towards people leaving school, from the major high street and investment banks, blue chip retailers, ‘the big four’ audit and consulting firms, the Civil Service and the NHS right through to leading engineering firms. UCAS now lists apprenticeships alongside university degrees. Degree apprenticeships in particular have captured the imagination of aspirational students, parents and employers. No longer are apprenticeships for the kids who “cannot” get to university – they are a compelling choice for many young people.
